through the looking-glass
A metamorphosis of counter-hegemonic visual existence
„Through the Looking-Glass“ is a project/ installation that aims to develop visual literacy, resist misrepresentation, and reclaim narratives that have long been silenced or ignored. The project is a homage to the act of existence, will, and memory, seeking to decode our societal makeup and position personal experiences within a collective narrative. It aims to challenge the history of art as propaganda, which has been used to justify exploitation and distortion.
Postcards, like the camera, were used as a tool of domination to promote colonialism and reinforce beliefs in European superiority. The aim of this installation is to subvert the history of colonial domination and create an aesthetic that fosters healing, nurtures the spirit, and transforms the narrative of repair and maintenance collectively. It seeks to challenge the systematic distortion imposed on our collective identity and promote resistance to misrepresentation and domination. Through the act of subversion, confrontation, and overwriting, the project aims to analyse the plethora of issues that are linked to each phantasm created in the past, influencing the present and encouraging us to speculate and act upon changing the systems that have been put in place.
Overall, “Through the Looking-Glass” is an opportunity to explore strategies of storytelling and artistic practices that are deeply tethered to the places from which they have emerged. By addressing their roots, the project counteracts collective historical amnesia, induced by our current societal politics, and serves as a means to think critically about the power of visual representation and the importance of reclaiming silenced narratives.
